Sonic the Hedgehog se hizo popular en 1991 , cuando se lanzó el primer juego, *Sonic the Hedgehog*, para Sega Genesis. El juego fue un éxito comercial y de crítica, y ayudó a establecer a Sega Genesis como un importante competidor del Super Nintendo Entertainment System.
